Acharya Ratna Guru Vidushi Jayalakshmi Premkumar was born into a family of musicians in Chennai, India. Her late parents, Mr. Krishnamoorthy and Madam Radha were great music lovers back then and were the reasons to introduce Smt. Jayalakshmi into the journey of music at the tender age of 8. Regardless, her early inspiration for music were her sisters, Acharya Ratna Smt. Vijayalakshmi Arumugam as well as Madam Rajalakshmi Muthukrishnan who are vastly accomplished musicians in Malaysia.
Alongside Smt. Jayalakshmi’s love and drive for music, she did not neglect her pursuit in academic education in India. Meanwhile in her music journey, she was first trained under the tutelage of legendary musicians in India namely, the late Professor Dr. S. Ramanathan inthe vocal, Dr R. S. Jayalakshmi in her veena as well as the late Dr. T. H. Subashchandran in the ghatam (a clay pot instrument). The many years of training had made Smt. Jayalakshmi profound to be one of the multi-talented musicians at her early age.
To continue her journey of pursuing further in her love for music, Smt. Jayalakshmi had acquired her Master of Arts (M. A) in Carnatic Music at Madras University, India in 2008.This university is known to be the oldest yet famous university in India. Now, sharing her artform with fellow Malaysians, she is a Veena as well as an Indian classical vocal teacher at the Temple of Fine Arts in Malacca, Temple of Fine Arts in Penang and Sahaana Fine Arts Seremban, Negeri Sembilan.
Besides being a senior performing artiste, Smt. Jayalakshmi had accompanied many leading artists both local and internationally on the Veena, Vocal as well as Ghatam. For the matter of fact, she is the only leading female ghatam (clay pot instrument) artiste in Malaysia as this instrument is generally performed by the men. Her hard touch on the Ghatam is a huge inspiration to many and has received countless applause from the audience.
Holistically, Smt. Jayalakshmi Premkumar had created a reputable name for herself in the Veena and Ghatam which is known to be her biggest accomplishment performing in most dance institutions and concerts across the world such as Malaysia, India, Australia and Singapore.
While her performances are ongoing, Smt. Jayalakshmi Premkumar has been invited to be part of the stretch of panel judges in various competitions hosted by ASTRO, a local broadcast television channel in Malaysia. Some of the events include ‘Paadal Thiran Potti’, ‘Vaanavil Superstar Competition’ and more.
In line with her musical journey, Smt. Jayalakshmi has successfully conducted several stage shows and concerts with her students. ‘Bharathiyin Kanavugal’ in 1999, ‘Perfect Cultural Night I, II and III’ in 2003, 2004 & 2009 respectively , yearly academic-grading concerts, workshops and seminars. Simultaneously, she has even trained numerous music teachers who are now professional, proficient and established music gurus in Malaysia. The stage shows which was taken place in Perfect Cultural Night I, II and III is merely a fund raising programme for the Ramakrisna Society Negeri Sembilan, Divine Life Society Negeri Sembilan & Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team K.L.
To add to her record, last September 2021, Smt. Jayalakshmi had initiated and organized a musical competition of Maestro Illayaraja’s (a Music Director from India, a living legend that goes without saying) devotional compositions. This exclusive event was held virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic hit and the funds were distributed to help the COVID-19 victims.
In the year 2022, she has been awarded the title “ACHARYA RATNA” by the legendary Padmabhushan Sangeetha Kalanidhi Dr. T.V.Gopalakrishnan a prominent legend in Carnatic and Hindustani classical vocal music in conjunction on his golden 90th birthday celebration.
With ocean-full of experiences, Smt. Jayalakshmi has released three CD albums, ‘Instrumental Hits’ on Veena, ‘Alazgan’ a devotional songs in vocal as well as ‘Sai Samarpan’ on Ghatam. Regardless, her albums hit big and became famous, thanks to her dedication in the music industry.
