Prof. Dr. Joseph Gonzales

Echoes of Movement: A Curator of Art, Knowledge, and Heritage

Prof. Dr. Joseph Gonzales is the former Head of Academic Studies and MFA Program Leader at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts (2016–2024), and Dean of the Faculty of Dance at the National Academy of Culture, Arts and Heritage (ASWARA), Malaysia (1998–2015). He began his career as a teacher at the Federal Academy of Ballet (1992–1996) and has worked professionally across multiple genres—including dance, theatre, musical theatre, and music—since 1981.

His professional experience includes collaborations with the Kuala Lumpur Dance Theatre, St. Moritz Gold Band, the UK National Tour and West End production of The King & I, full-length works such as Becoming King: The Pakyung Revisited, over 50 short works, and the gamelan theatre concert Maya: Gong Illusions, among others.

He holds a PhD in Dance Studies and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Malaya, a Master of Arts in Choreography (Middlesex University), a Master of Buddhist Studies (University of Hong Kong), and a Master of Cultural Management (Chinese University of Hong Kong). He also holds diplomas in Ballet, Modern Dance, and Performing Arts from Bush Davies School, the Royal Academy of Dance, the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing, and the London Studio Centre, England.

An author of books on contemporary dance in Malaysia, he was awarded the Cross-Cultural Champion of Arts (2007) and Gamechanger of the Year (2019). He has curated international performance platforms such as Tari, Jamu, Tapestry, and Gelombang Baru for ASWARA, and continues to serve on advisory panels for education and arts funding.

Former Co-Chairman of the Asian Dance Committee (South Korea) and Vice-President of the Southeast Asia World Dance Alliance, Prof. Dr. Joseph is credited with pioneering a multicultural and inclusive curriculum at ASWARA. This forward-thinking framework has since served as a model for other Malaysian universities.

Notably, it enabled Bharatanatyam to be taught as a core subject—an initiative that led to several award-winning productions such as Crossing Borders in Bharatanatyam, Nadi by Imran Syafiq, 3 Faces, and The Golden Road. It also resulted in nine arangetrams by non-Indian students, reflecting the program’s commitment to inclusivity and artistic excellence.

Prof. Dr. Joseph is also the Artistic Director of Forging Traditions, a national dance tour project by ASK Dance Company, founded in 2011 and supported by the Sime Darby Foundation. The project continues to introduce and teach the fundamentals of Bharatanatyam to thousands of Malaysians nationwide.
